The Solid State Society
Solid State Society. Who are we? What exactly are we all about?
There was once a town known by the name of Plano, TX. Within this town was a high school commonly called Plano West Senior High. Our story began when one of its students by the name of Daniel Leblanc had this crazy idea to pull off something big and memorable before disappearing off to college along with the rest of the crowd. Something different. And so he gathered a group of his friends, some chalk, a sketchpad, a few feet of string, and a long stick and began working on what would be later known as Project Full Circle I, all over the school’s courtyard…
The name “Solid State Society” was first given during the second project of the group: a mural relating to several retro video game characters. A letter was written and signed as such apologizing for creating a chalk mess on the school’s wall. Due to circumstances, however, it was never posted, but instead led to the official creation of the group.
Solid State Society is a little more than “pixeltologists creating video game art” (i.e. nerds drawing on bricks). And it is definitely not about going out and vandalizing school property. Instead, it is a group of individuals striving to create works of art (or “science”, as some may argue) that are outlandish, memorable, and most importantly, different. Each member of the society, if they so choose, can take charge of his or her own series (which is simply their own set of projects). The works themselves can range from pixeltology (the art or science of creating pixilated drawings of old school video games), just plain chalkfitti (portmanteau of “chalk” and “graffiti” involving washable multicolor chalk), or something completely new and, quite possibly, ridiculous.
Oh, and just for the record, the monetary funds raised by each project—if any—are all directed towards a good cause.
Welcome to our world. Check out our little legacy we hope to leave behind. And knock yourself out…
